Kalamata is a city that you can admire several important sights. The church of the Holy Apostles, the symbol of the city, is a small Byzantine church of the 10th century AD. The castle offers panoramic views of the city.The railway station is located south of the city center and is a remarkable outdoor railway museum, the largest in Greece and awarded by the European Commission.
The archaeological museum of the city “Benakion” holds important archaeological finds from the wider area of Messinia, dating back to the period from the Copper Age to the Roman times. The military museum of Kalamata is a museum that keeps various weapons and military uniforms of Greeks in various historical periods. The Folklore Museum of the city houses exhibits that have to do with the traditional arts of the area, with old objects and tools and traditional costumes. The Municipal Art Gallery and the Gallery of Contemporary Greek Art operate in the city with about 500 exhibits. The Popular Library of the city has been operating since 1962 and currently has more than 85,000 titles and a 50,000-sheet newspaper archive from the 19th century until today.
It is also worth visiting the beautiful and imposing temple of Ypapanti the Savior under the Castle of the city, which is also the metropolis of the city. In the monastery of “Kalograion” you can see various silk woven fabrics and the famous Kalamatian scarves exposed there as well as the looms with which they are woven.
